Why are sex workers’ rights important to you?
As a drag queen, I am a performer. I am reminded of something a theatre teacher said in class one day – there is a reason that in many large cities, the theatre district is next to the red light district. While I am not a sex worker, and none of the performers I work with in Singapore are either, so many of my friends have been or are still sex workers. Almost everyone of them has described experiences with theft or assault of some sort. None have been able to get any kind of legal recourse.
There are a lot of people who think sex workers’ rights involves promoting sex work and promiscuity. What would you say to such people?
That position is so deeply illogical as to not warrant a response. That said, let’s be honest with ourselves; we’re plenty promiscuous as a society, we just lie about it. Lying is bad for you.
Why do you think Singaporeans should care about sex workers’ rights?
If I told you there are people who offer an essential service to society and meet a real need of many people, and then I told you that in their line of work, these same people are at risk of persecution, physical harm, theft and so on, you too would be outraged. We should care because we are talking about human beings.
If you could change one thing about the way society thinks about sex work or the sex industry, what would it be?
I want us to recognise that sex workers are experts at what they do. And if we can start there, maybe we can start to value them as we would all other experts we meet from day to day.
